Sling’s Gamefinder

Sling is a live television streaming subscription service, operating in the United States and offering hundreds of major and specialty channels. Customers can watch their favorite shows, games, movies, reality programming, and news coverage on connected TVs, in a Web browser, or on a mobile app.

The business challenge that drove this feature was the popularity of live sporting events and customer confusion about which games were streamed on the service.

Customer Need

Many tune-in customers come to the Sling service for sports, which we see in our traffic data and from primary customer research. The customer’s need is to find out if the Sling service has a channel that is carrying their league, their teams, and any specific games or matches.

Challenge

Live sports on television is a complex question and business, given local blackouts, league and programmer rules, same-day decisions about coverage, and customer billing ZIP or city/market. Additionally, we did not have this content on our site at all as customers shopped.

Approach

We built a feature called Gamefinder, which combines a number of licensed and internal data sources into a simple user experience. Customers can browse by league, or search for their favorite team, to see if the competition they want to watch is something Sling offers. The content refreshes daily, to ensure the schedule reflects the real world and the channels which will have the games.

Results

Prospective customers who use Gamefinder convert at a rate that is 6x higher than those who do not.
